{"id":82,"date":"2017-09-01T09:30:48","date_gmt":"2017-09-01T09:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/snow.geus.dk\/?p=82"},"modified":"2017-09-01T09:31:18","modified_gmt":"2017-09-01T09:31:18","slug":"workshop-including-model-uses-of-optical-remotely-sensed-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/snow.geus.dk\/index.php\/2017\/09\/01\/workshop-including-model-uses-of-optical-remotely-sensed-data\/","title":{"rendered":"workshop including Model uses of Optical Remotely Sensed Data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><span class=\"il\">see session 4 in the following that is designed to resonate with this ESA contract&#8230;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span class=\"il\">Workshop:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b>Modeling Meltwater in Snow and Firn: Processes, Validation, Intercomparison and Model uses of Optical Remotely Sensed Data<\/b><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_663773338\"><span class=\"aQJ\">20-22 September 2017<\/span><\/span>, Copenhagen.<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<span class=\"il\">workshop<\/span>\u00a0starts\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_663773339\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Wednesday Sep 20 at 12.00<\/span><\/span>, and ends\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_663773340\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Friday Sep 22 at 12.00<\/span><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>A PROMICE 10-year jubilee and reception is planned for the afternoon of\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_663773341\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Sep 22<\/span><\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Purpose<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to present and discuss results on modeling of meltwater retention processes in snow and firn on ice sheets and glaciers;<\/li>\n<li>to plan and coordinate meltwater retention model development;<\/li>\n<li>to emphasize optical remote sensing snow parameter data comparison and data assimilation;<\/li>\n<li>to formulate a protocol for a meltwater retention model intercomparison project (RetMIP)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is\u00a0<span class=\"il\">workshop<\/span>\u00a0two as part of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ufm.dk\/en\/research-and-innovation\/councils-and-commissions\/the-danish-council-for-independent-research\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/ufm.dk\/en\/research-and-innovation\/councils-and-commissions\/the-danish-council-for-independent-research&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499176739352000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFBiGWJg4DviE7DXhVydI9UM8hDog\"><u>Danish Council for Independent Research<\/u><\/a>\u00a0(DFF) Natural Sciences program (FNU) project 4002-00234:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/retain.geus.dk\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/retain.geus.dk\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499176739352000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFmfgt6Fbr5SH7cAbHyMSXEHL3IBA\"><u>Understanding and predicting non-linear change in the permeability of Greenland firn and has a special session<\/u><\/a>\u00a0co-sponsored by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/snow.geus.dk\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/snow.geus.dk\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499176739352000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGxpvOlG6I9_kZTpLoI3s4xoy3sgQ\"><u>ESA\u00a0<\/u><u>Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) Sentinel-3 for Science, Land Study 1: SNOW<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>Sessions<\/b><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Snow model development<\/li>\n<li>Meltwater retention model validation<\/li>\n<li>Meltwater retention model intercomparison project (RetMIP)<\/li>\n<li>Optical remote sensing to improve snow models<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Session 1 welcomes, for example, model considerations of water availability vs. percolation rate vs. refreezing rate to explore the importance of heterogeneous percolation modelling in polar firn; fine-and-local scale\/detailed modeling with possible suggestions to including bulk effects in larger-scale models; inclusion of piping (for instance, by \u201cskipping layers\u201d during percolation) in distributed or single-column models; inclusion of horizontal water motion in snow and firn, i.e. between grid cells.<\/p>\n<p>Session 2 will focus on discussions of useful model validation metrics and aim to compile observational datasets that may be used to validate the above processes.<\/p>\n<div>Session 3 will discuss and formulate a protocol for a meltwater retention model intercomparison project.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Session 4 serves an\u00a0ESA Sentinel-3 for Science Land Study: Snow \u201c<b>S-3-Snow\u201d<\/b>\u00a0that includes an element to gather and prioritize snow modeller interest and requirements about optical remotely sensed snow parameters (<b>snow extent, albedo, grain size, impurity content, etc.<\/b>). The ESA study is to engage\u00a0users of Sentinel-3 snow optical retrievals in 1.) model comparison and\/or 2.) data assimilation.\u00a0The<span class=\"il\">workshop<\/span>\u00a0session is to:<\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">survey and prioritize remotely sensed snow parameter data\u00a0users\u2019 requirements for global and regional snow information<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">discuss how to enhance methods for estimating snow parameters, either from remote sensing or from modeling, and to evaluate advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">consult users about the utility\/interest in other snow products suitable for studying climate-related issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><b><span class=\"il\">Workshop<\/span>\u00a0expected outcomes<\/b><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>a protocol for a retention model intercomparison project (RetMIP) including instructions and datasets for validation.<\/li>\n<li>a list of requirements and minimum accuracy levels for models using optical remotely sensed snow parameter data<\/li>\n<li>a journal special issue like the 2016\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journal.frontiersin.org\/researchtopic\/4880\/melt-water-retention-processes-in-snow-and-firn-on-ice-sheets-and-glaciers-observations-and-modeling\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/journal.frontiersin.org\/researchtopic\/4880\/melt-water-retention-processes-in-snow-and-firn-on-ice-sheets-and-glaciers-observations-and-modeling&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499176739352000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEDnU4Ov2VEaJiJYlYV_clDQHQf5g\">special issue in Frontiers in Earth Science \u2013 Melt Water Retention Processes in Snow and Firn on Ice Sheets and Glaciers: Observations and Modeling<\/a>, papers feeding into the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/srocc\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/srocc\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499176739352000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFIeUt8Vh-TGoH5sAbwXfHDXeXzOQ\">IPCC Special Report on Climate change and the oceans and the cryosphere.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>Venue<\/b><\/div>\n<div>Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), \u00d8stervoldgade 10, DK-1350 Copenhagen K<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>Contributions<\/b><\/div>\n<div>Contributions are welcomed in the form of oral presentations and\/or posters.
