The ESA contract is to engage\u00a0users of Sentinel-3 snow optical retrievals in 1.) model comparison and\/or 2.) data assimilation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Synergistic is a September 20-22, 2017 Copenhagen Workshop:\u00a0<strong>Modeling Melt Water Retention Processes in Snow and Firn on Ice Sheets and Glaciers: Observations<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A workshop<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0supporting the ESA contract session is to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">to survey and prioritise remotely sensed snow parameter data\u00a0users&#8217; requirements for global and regional snow information<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">to discuss how to enhance methods for estimating snow parameters, either from remote sensing or from modeling, and to evaluate advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">to consult users about the utility\/interest in other snow products suitable for studying climate-related issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">To be added to mailing list, please contact\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:jeb@geus.dk\">jeb@geus.dk<\/a>\u00a0charing the snow optical remote sensing session .<\/p>\n<p>For the ESA contract, the outcome is a list of requirements and minimum accuracy levels for the\u00a0optical remotely sensed snow parameters.<\/p>\n<p>The Workshop is co-organised by Peter Langen <a href=\"mailto:pla@dmi.dk\">pla@dmi.dk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the <a href=\"http:\/\/retain.geus.dk\/\">Danish Research Council grant<\/a>, the workshop outcome is expected to\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>a protocol for a retention model intercomparison project (RetMIP?) including instructions and datasets for validation.<\/li>\n<li>a journal special issue like the 2016\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journal.frontiersin.org\/researchtopic\/4880\/melt-water-retention-processes-in-snow-and-firn-on-ice-sheets-and-glaciers-observations-and-modeling\">special issue in Frontiers in Earth Science &#8211; Melt Water Retention Processes in Snow and Firn on Ice Sheets and Glaciers: Observations and Modeling<\/a>, papers feeding into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/srocc\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/srocc\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1491294007408000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE4xdUNjMJm1jRqhsyBjpiEw1kD2Q\">IPCC Special Report on Climate change and the oceans and the cryosphere.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This ESA SEOM Sentinel-3 for Science Land Study: Snow &#8220;S-3-Snow&#8221;\u00a0includes an element to gather and prioritise snow modeller interest and requirements about optical remotely sensed snow parameters (snow extent, albedo, grain size, impurity content).
